Branding Photography Tips from a Denver Branding Photographer
One of the things I hear most often from clients is this:
“I don’t feel confident in front of the camera.”
Or…
“I hate having my photo taken.”
First, let me say this — you are not alone.
And second, there is a difference between these two things.
Everyone can look good on camera. Truly.
Whether you enjoy the process is another story — but that part can absolutely be learned.
With the right preparation, support, and mindset, it’s possible to not only look great in your photos, but to actually feel relaxed… confident… and yes, even enjoy being in front of the camera during your branding session.
That lack of confidence is often the biggest barrier I see when it comes to booking a brand shoot. And honestly, it doesn’t stop there. It often shows up as hesitation around:
-
Putting yourself out there online
-
Going live on social media
-
Being the visible face of your business
If that sounds familiar, this post is for you.
Today, I’m sharing my top 5 tips for feeling camera-confident, so you can embrace your face, your presence, and actually enjoy your branding session.
1. Give Yourself Permission to Enjoy It
We’re almost trained not to enjoy being in the spotlight. Many of us have learned to shy away from the camera or immediately scan photos for everything we don’t like.
I do this too — even during my own branding sessions.
But here’s the shift:
If you walk into your shoot telling yourself, “This is allowed to be fun. It might feel a little out of my comfort zone — but it gets to be fun,” you’re already halfway there.
That mindset softens your body, your expression, and your energy — and it shows in your photos.

2. Work With a Photographer You Feel Comfortable With
Just like your clients need to trust you, you need to trust your brand photographer.
A good branding photographer doesn’t just show up with a camera — they guide you through the entire experience:
-
Planning your session
-
Helping you choose what to wear
-
Coaching you on posing and expression
-
And cheering you on the whole way
When you feel supported, it’s hard not to relax.
On the flip side, if you don’t feel comfortable with the person behind the camera, that tension shows up quickly — in your jaw, your shoulders, your eyes. That sparkle disappears.
Connection matters. Comfort matters. Trust matters.

3. Breathe (Seriously)
This one sounds simple, but it’s huge.
So many people hold their breath during a photo session — the same way you might when swimming a lap in the pool (just me?).
Holding your breath stores tension in your body.
Breathing releases it.
Drop your shoulders.
Take a slow breath in.
Exhale.
Your photographer will handle the rest.
4. Remember Why You’re Doing This
Your brand shoot isn’t just about getting photos of yourself.
It’s about reaching the people who need you.
Most business owners don’t do what they do just to make money — they’re driven by purpose, service, and a desire to help others. Your photos are a bridge between you and the people you’re meant to serve.
When you remember your why, the focus shifts away from self-criticism and toward connection.
Your future clients deserve to know who you are.

5. Look at Your Photos Objectively (When You Receive Them)
This step happens after your session — and it’s just as important.
When your gallery arrives, it’s easy for those old inner critics to sneak back in. Instead, try this:
-
Remember how you felt leaving the shoot
-
Look at the images through your ideal client’s eyes
-
Ask: Which image would they connect with instantly?
It can also be incredibly helpful to ask someone you trust — someone who isn’t as self-critical — to help you choose your final images. They’ll see the whole picture, not just the tiny details you might fixate on.
